asked: So, you are considering installing a
solar power system at your house and have a quote. What factors and issues do you need to be taking into account to work out if it is viable for you?
1. Initial investment cost
This basically is the cost you would have to spend in total in having a system installed. Various government grants and financially incentives are available to reduce this, but it usually ends up being a significant investment up front. This is in essence the ‘sunk’ cost of the system.
2. Ongoing maintenance of the system
Nothing lasts forever, especially equipment put in the sun. The solar panels (or modules) are usually rated for between 20 to 30 years. But what is often forgotten that other equipment, like the inverter (converts the
solar power into mains rated power) has a much shorter operational life, maybe only as long as 5 years. So if you consider your system to last for 30 years in total you could go through as many as 6 inverters in that time.
3. Availability of feed-in tariff schemes
