17 years asked: Is there a limit to the output of a windmill, considering there must be a way to build a windmill so the turbines are big enough to power a large motor, but also small enough to be able to turn quickly?
Is there a limit to how large the turbines can be?

Windmills can actually produce so much energy that you can actually sell it back to the electrical companies and in some states that is law. You can run your entire place on it with leftovers if you do them right. There are lots of them around there and in the state I live in you see them all over the place working fine.
Make Residential Solar Panels
The largest wind turbine at present is about 6 MW. That is enough to power about 5000 homes. They are designing and building larger ones every year, but there are disadvantages to making it a lot larger, such as transporting the blades, and assembly.
There is no reason to have it turn “quickly”.
Are they energy efficient? They convert about 40% of the energy of the wind that hits them to electricity.

Make Residential Wind Power Turbine
they generate no/zero/0 electricity when there is no wind or high winds. They have maintenance needs. When everything is just right, they are great. A 4MW wind turbine is rated as a 1 MW device because of the downtime. They cannot be ramped up and down with demand. Although they are 40% efficient, and a fossil fuel generator is maybe 35-38%, nuclear and hydro are closer to 80%.
